Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian in the Swiss city of Hölstein. They purchased the recently closed Lohner & Co watch factory, and on June 1, 1904, the two men entered into a contract with the local mayor. They named their new watch company Oris after a nearby stream. and began industrial production of pocket watches. In its founding year, Oris had 67 employees.
In 1906 the company opened an assembly plant and a second factory in nearby Holderbank. Another factory followed at Como in 1908. By 1911 Oris had become the largest employer in Holstein. Employing more than 300 people, by 1914 Oris was producing more than one million watches. To attract more watchmakers The company then built houses and apartments for its employees. It expanded in size to include additional factories in 1929 in Courgenay (1916), Herbetswil (1925) and Ziefen (1925), when they were all operating at full capacity. Oris boasts that it can produce “One clock every three seconds.”
